Posted by Blu on April 10, 2008

Mya made her debut in 1998 with a self-titled album, Mya. The first single off the album was with Sisqo of the R&B quartet Dru Hill.

The next single was a song featuring No Limit Records rapper Silkk the Shocker. Both songs reached top ten on the U.S. Billlboard R&B/Hip Hop chart while “It’s All About Me” also reached the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. The album was certified platinum on October 1, 1998 but went on to go double platinum with over 2.1 million copies sold in the U.S. and over 3.8 million copies sold world wide.

In addition to her solo work, Mýa was also a featured artist with Ol’ Dirty Bastard on Pras’ 1998 Grammy nominated hit, “Ghetto Supastar (That Is What You Are)”, from the Bulworth soundtrack. During the same year, Mýa also scored another hit as a featured vocalist on BLACKstreet’s “Take Me There” from the The Rugrats Movie soundtrack, which also featured guest raps from Mase and Blinky Blink.

On April 2000, Mya released her sophomore album Fear of Flying. The album only sold 72,000 units in its first week. The first single “Best of Me” featured rapper Jadakiss, and gave her a more urban appeal. The remix to the single featured Brooklyn rapper Jay-Z, but neither songs crossed over well to the mainstream.

Her second single “Cas of Ex” made it to #2 on the US Billboard charts. The label then re-released her album in November, with the remix to “Best of Me”. There was also another single titled “Free”, which was on the Bait soundtrack. In March 2001 the album was certified platinum selling 1.8 million copies, and 5.1 million worldwide.

In 2001 Mya collaborated with Christina Aguilera, Pink, and Lil’ Kim for the remake of Patti LaBelle’s “Lady Marmalade” for the Moulin Rouge soundtrack.

The song and video turned out to be a huge success, Mya alongside Christina, Pink, and Lil Kim got to perform the song at the Grammy, and also took one home for Best Pop Collaboration. “Lady Marmalade” also earned them two MTV Video Music Awards for Best Video from a Film, and Video of the Year.

After the success of her previous musical endeavors, Mya took a shot at acting, and made her debut in 2002 Acadamy Award winning musical film, Chicago. Prior to that, she had won a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Ensemble Performance.

In the following years she continued with acting in Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights (2004), Shall We Dance? (2004), and Cursed (2005)

In 2003, My released her highly anticipated third album Moodring. The labum peeked at the #3 spot selling 113,00 units in it’s first week. The first single “My Love is Like Whoa” was produced by Missy Elliot. The video for the single was nominated for two MTV awards(one for Best Dance Video which was beaten by Justin Timberlake and one for Best Choreography in a Video which was beaten by Beyoncé).

The second single off the album was titled “Fallen”. That single reached it’s peak, only making it to #41 on the charts.

Moodring was certified gold by September of that year, and went platinum by March 2004, selling 1.6 million copies, and 3.2 worldwide.

Since 2004, Mya has been trying to come out with her first album Liberation (originally titled Control Freak), was scheduled to be released mid-2005. She decided to leave A&M Records in the Fall of 2005, and signed with Motown Records. She then renamed her album Liberation, and started recruiting producers for her new project. Mid- 2006 a single titled “Ayo” was leaked onto the internet, but the singer was stuck in legal obligations and therefore couldn’t come out with an album.

In March 2007 she collaborated with Lil Wayne on a Scott Storch produced track titled “Lock You Down”, but it’s didn’t do well on radio. Another single, “Ridin” was released last summer, along with a video later in September. In November the album was leaked.

Find out what she’s been up to lately, after the jump.

In a recent interview, Mya stated that she was leaving Motown Records, would possible go the independent route. She also has new management (Live Nation), which is also a team that works for Madonna. Coincidently Live Nation is also producing “Chicago” on Broadway. Mya will be playing the role of Velma Kelly from May 12th, to July 13th.

Right now she is currently on a CBS reality show, Secret Talents of the Stars. The show premiered Tuesday, April 8 @10pm.

I heard that secrets of the stars got cancel after the first episode. mya’s performance was the best performance of the night. but she didnt get enough votes to make it to the finals even though the judges love and felt she should make it to the finals. she dazzeled alot of viewers and her performance has created alot of buzz! she may not have made it to the finals but she left a winner to alot of people because her performance stole the show. since mya didnt make it. there is no show! her performance was the best secret talent. how can there be a show if the celebrity with the best talent didnt make it. i believe thats why cbs canceled it! all the other celebrity had stupid talents that made watching the show boring. the show didnt get good until almost the end of the show when mya performed! and she killed it!

Thanks! I usually don’t like gravitate towards show like those unless some says it’s good. Im waiting on a comeback for her. It’s not like she’s a 1 hit wonder, she had THREE platinum albums. Then again, she’s gotten lost in the shuffle. Beyonce has things on lock for the 25+ and Ciara/Rihann has it on like for the under 25.
